Itinerary

Palace of Happiness

This mansion belonged to the wealthy Muxtarov, who commissioned its construction as a surprise Valentine's gift for his second wife. It is said that she had admired a similar building during her travels in Italy, so Muxtarov engaged the renowned Qasumov brothers to replicate it.

Their love story seems straight out of a fairy tale: Muxtarov, born into humble beginnings as the son of a Mardakan carter, was a self-taught engineer who rose to prominence as a supplier of support equipment to the burgeoning oil industry.

He fell in love with the daughter of an Ossetian aristocrat while on business in Vladikavkaz, but his lack of noble lineage led to repeated refusals when he sought her hand in marriage.

Museum

Situated in the historic Inner City of Baku, the Baku Museum of Miniature Books stands as a unique testament to the art of tiny volumes. Opening its doors on April 2, 2002, it holds the distinction of being the sole museum of its kind globally.

The museum's impressive collection is the result of three decades of dedication by Zarifa Salahova, sister of renowned artist Tahir Salahov. Her personal compilation comprises over 6,500 miniature books sourced from 64 countries across the globe.

Among its treasures are miniature publications dating back to post-revolutionary Russia and the Soviet era. The museum's exhibition also boasts selections from Moldavia, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, as well as the republics of Central Asia and Europe.

Within its confines lie rare editions from literary giants such as Chukovsky, Barto, Gogol, Dostoyevsky, and the illustrious works of A.S. Pushkin. Furthermore, the museum proudly showcases miniature volumes of Azerbaijani classics, including the likes of Vagif, Khurshidbanu Natavan, Nizami Ganjavi, Nasimi, Fizuli, Samed Vurgun, Mirza Fatali Akhundov, among others.

Muhammad Mosque

The Muhammad Mosque, also known as the Siniggala Mosque, stands as a testament to the history of Old City, Baku, having been erected in the 11th century. Its alternate name, Siniggala, originates from the minaret, dubbed Siniggala, meaning "damaged tower."

This moniker arose in 1723 during the Russo-Persian War when a Russian military fleet, under Admiral Matyushkin's command, demanded the city's surrender.

The refusal prompted the Russian ships to bombard the area, resulting in damage to the minaret from a shell fired by the Russian forces. Interestingly, shortly after this incident, a sudden stormy wind pushed the Russian fleet out to sea, which the locals interpreted as a divine punishment for the invaders.

Remarkably, the minaret of Muhammad Mosque remained unreconstructed until the mid-19th century, serving as a poignant symbol of the resilience and valor of the tower's defenders throughout the years.
