Sri Lanka recently faced disruptions in its visa management due to the suspension of a controversial e-Visa system, causing difficulties for tourists. However, there is good news for travelers: Sri Lanka has officially reinstated its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, making it easier to obtain a visa online again.

The issues began when a private consortium was contracted to introduce a new e-Visa system, replacing the previously state-managed ETA. This move was met with backlash due to higher fees (up to $18.50 compared to the $2 ETA fee), lack of transparency, and the absence of a public tender in awarding the contract. These concerns sparked petitions and led to the suspension of the e-Visa portal on August 2.

In response to the crisis, Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court temporarily reinstated the ETA system, which has now been fully reactivated following the election of a new president, Anura Kumara Dissanayaka. Tourists and business travelers can now apply for their Sri Lanka visa by ETA via the official government website at eta.gov.lk. The ETA costs $50, and once approved, it is valid for six months, allowing for a 30-day stay with two possible entries into the country.

This reactivation restores a simple, transparent, and reliable visa application process, benefiting both travelers and Sri Lanka’s vital tourism industry. Before traveling, visitors must also complete an online Arrival Card on the eservices.immigration.gov.lk portal.

Potential Visa-Free Access for 35+ Countries

In addition to restoring the ETA, Sri Lanka’s government is exploring visa-free access for tourists from over 30 countries, including India, Japan, and the United States. Although the official list and details remain unconfirmed, this initiative could provide further ease for international travelers and help boost tourism numbers, which have been below expectations.

In September alone, 92,639 international tourists visited Sri Lanka, bringing the total for 2024 to over 1.45 million. With improved visa processes, Sri Lanka aims to attract 2.3 million visitors by the end of the year.

If you're planning a trip to Sri Lanka, the reactivated ETA system ensures a straightforward visa process, and potential visa-free access may further simplify your journey in the near future!
