We are here to tell you about the Riyadh Air’s first few successful non-commercial flights! Saudi Arabia’s new national carrier, Riyadh Air, has successfully completed its first few non-commercial flights on 12th September 2024. This Riyadh Air non-commercial flight was aimed towards gaining certification. This significant milestone is part of the airline's rigorous test flights required to secure its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA). The earliest non-commercial flight was departed from King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh and landed at King Abdul-Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, lasting approximately 90 minutes.
The AOC is a crucial certificate for Riyadh Air to begin full-scale commercial passenger and cargo services. The carrier, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), will use a fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to carry out these operations. Initially announced in 2023, Riyadh Air has ambitious plans to expand its reach to over 250 global destinations and aims to triple annual traffic to 330 million passengers by 2030, aligning with Saudi Arabia's ‘Vision 2030’ growth strategy.
Operating under the flight number RX5001, the non-commercial flight marks a key step toward Riyadh Air's eventual launch of services, scheduled for 2025. As part of the certification process, the airline will operate additional domestic and international test flights in the upcoming months. Although future routes have not been disclosed by the airline, the choice of medium and long-haul aircraft, such as the 787-9 Dreamliner, indicates that Riyadh Air will likely target international routes not currently served by its sister airline, Saudia.
The airline has ordered 39 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for an additional 33 aircraft, positioning itself to become a leading player in the global aviation field.
In preparation for its official launch, Riyadh Air has been forging key partnerships with global airlines and suppliers. In June 2024, the airline entered into agreements with Singapore Airlines and Air China, followed by a multi-layer commercial deal with Virgin Atlantic in September 2024. These partnerships are designed to enhance the Riyadh Air’s market presence from Day One, focusing on interline connectivity, codeshare agreements and collaboration in areas such as frequent flyer programs and cargo services. Other notable agreements include those with Delta Air Lines and Turkish Airlines, ensuring Riyadh Air's integration into key global markets.
Riyadh Air has also expressed its gratitude on X (previously known as twitter) to several key partners who contributed to its certification process. Special mentions were given to GACA for regulatory support, Saudia for leasing the Dreamliner aircraft used for the first flight, Riyadh Airports Company for logistical assistance and Saudia Technic for its role in aircraft maintenance. The airline’s collaboration with third-party suppliers further extends to apply innovative digital solutions, flight operations efficiencies and the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel to reduce carbon emissions, reflecting its commitment to environmental responsibility.
Launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in March 2023, Riyadh Air forms a critical part of Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 plan, which aims to position the Kingdom as a global aviation hub. The surge in air travel demand, both domestically and internationally, has urged the country to expand its aviation infrastructure including new airports and an increased aircraft fleet. Riyadh Air's journey towards full certification and its strategic partnerships highlights its role in advancing Saudi Arabia's aviation goals, connecting the Kingdom of Saudi to the world and improving its global standing in the aviation industry.
